6 steps I did NOT take to increase blog traffic by 130,000 views in one month

In one month in the early goings three of my blogs, PanAsianBiz, RisingSunOfNihon and TheBizOfKnowledge, combined for a page viewership of 360,000+ up 55% from the 230,000 the previous month.

I know more about what did not cause the growth than what did. Following are 6 steps I did NOT take.

1. It was NOT because of exceptional writing skill. At the time I was posting way too much – 150 blogs each month for each blog. I was not giving or more accurately did not give each post the quality attention I would have liked. (See there…three times I used ‘each’ in this short point.

2. It was NOT because of timeliness. For some reason posts I wrote in months previously were picked up on, recycled and reread.

The problem with blogs are the name

The way I see it, the main problem with blogs is what they are called – blogs.

What an ugly name!

Blog also sounds too much like blah__g, blah__g, blah__g. And unfortunately too many folks think that is pretty much what is going on at blogs; the blogger is just blah blah blahing away about their love life or lack thereof, their job or lack thereof, their rants and the like.

Not so.

When people ask me what I do for a living I sometimes tell them I own a network of dynamic web sites with interactive capability. They are dynamic because they are updated often, even multiple times daily and interactive because readers can comment and give feedback.

To which I a response something like, “Ooo…” “Whoa!” or “Cool.” And more often than not, “Huh!?” [Read more...]
