It is my first time to create a personal blog “Walking in Ancient Silk Road” with the help of my professor, Mr. Bill Belew’s Marketing Social Media class. I am excited with lots of challenges.
As a MBA student, through reading the book of “Marketing with Social Media”, I learned how to create a personal website to show people my hometown, Xinjiang’s natural scenery, and minority culture. As a business person, I learned how to use social media to promote marketing, develop business, and get more customers. In this article, I will summarize ten points I learned from Bill Belew’s book of Marketing with Social Media.
1. If my blog does not have love, nobody will know it.
In this book, Professor Bill Belew shared with us his experiences of creating his first professional blog in March 2006, his experience in getting the first comment from readers. His personal experience tells us if we just create a blog with no love, nobody would like to take their time to visit a boring blog. Especially, we hope the website to bring business, we should design a living blog.
I am interested in Bill Belew’s experience related to international business for almost 20 years. PAB is Bill Belew’s blog about business in the Pan-Asia region. The network includes two websites, about Japan and about China.
2. A good blogger needs to find self-worth traffic.
From April to December 2012, Professor Bill Belew’s website was visited by 65,000 people in less than an hour, 10,000 views in a minute, 166 visitors per second. In this book, Bill Belew shared his knowledge and experiences. To become a good blogger, I should know how many people visited my website per day, per hours, or even per minute. The page view depends on the topic.
3. How to balance an article between appeal to a reader and appeal to the search engine.
Through reading the book, I learned if I write article/post only with a reader in mind, a search engine won’t find me. If I write only for search engines, readers will find us but they won’t stay around. I should make a good balance between appeal to readers (first) and search engines (second). The book taught me how to bring people to visit my website, enjoy and communicate with me.
4. Learned how to create a successful business blog
The book taught me how to use metrics to measure my blog whether successful or unsuccessful, such as to measure how many pages are viewed by people, how long people will stay on my website.
5. Learned how to create an active, dynamic blog as part of my social media strategy, and how to get real and relevant traffic to my website.
In this book, Professor Bill Belew addressed five reasons why business blogs are the king of social media, the purpose is to help people to build a better business blog.
a. Bloggers get read by readers they know. Bloggers with enough traffic can know the demographics of their readers, and bring good business opportunities. Knowing these demographics is not only good for potential advertisers but for blog owners who want to sell something.
b. Bloggers can communicate with their readers. The princes of social media do their best work when they are complemented by a good blog or website. If I add links for some good and useful links which are relevant to my website’s topic, when people read this related link, they will get more information to know my topic. Also, people are able to know each other through blog interactive communication.
c. If I want to be a good blogger, I need to add good quality content to my website, people can find me and will visit my blog for a long time even when I stop writing for a while.
d. Bill Belew shared his story with us to show how his successful blog made money for him. A good blog is a platform to provide different services like consulting, speaking, membership website and so on.
e. Blogs will be given a good return on investment of time. Social media is good for branding at best. Long term residual traffic to a well-written blog post is good stuff and pays well.
6. I learned the keys to getting serious traffic to my website.
In this book, Bill Belew let me learn four keys to getting serious traffic to our website.
a. I must have a sufficient quantity of articles/posts on my website, in order to be noticed by people. If I have more stuff at my website, I can be found by people easier.
b. Not only on quantity, I must write good quality articles at my website, so as to attract the search engines and the readers to visit my website.
c. I must update my website consistently. The daily updated works depend on my traffic goals and the target market size. If I update my website more often, people visit our website more often.
d. In order to let my website with longevity, I need to keep writing something interesting or new different articles on my blog.
7. I learned the obstacles and solutions to get my blog started
In this book, Professor Bill Belew not only taught me the five biggest obstacles while creating my blog but also provided solutions to help me overcome these obstacles. For example:
a. How to choose a domain name for my blog? In Belew’s opinion, the domain name is not as important as tagline, categories, title and themes of our blog, the key is on the topic. A good domain name and length should be short and spell easily for people. The average length of a domain name is eight or nine characters.
b. How to choose a good, reliable and cheap hosting. Based on Professor Bill Belew’s recommendation, I purchased a domain and hosting from BM2, it is very cheap and easily to use. At the first week, when I can not log on my website, BM2 provides me good customer service. After purchasing a domain and hosting, I started to create my personal website “unlink.com”.
c. How to select a good software or template. Also based on Bill Belew’s advice, I select WordPress as my blog template. It is very flexibility and easily to use. Most important things, it is free to install.
d. How to choose the main topic for my blog. According to the book said, the single best way to get more traffic to my website is to write more article and post on my blog. I choose a topic to introduce my hometown, Xinjiang’s minority culture, and natural scenery.
e. How to avoid too much work in making a living blog? In this book, Bill Belew provided us five qualities on how to find a good blog consultant.
8. I learned how to define quality in my blog.
In this book, Professor Bill Belew taught me how to make my blog with high quality. Here are some tips I learned from the book.
a. Create my own original content.
b. Keep a post with 150-250 words. Not longer than 300 words, not shorter than 100 words.
c. Put at least one visual image in the post.
d. Add two blogs or two external links in the post, so that people can find our information from these external links.
e. Put at least one internal link in the post, so that people can find or read my previous articles that they are interested.
f. Reserved discussion area for people to comment or discuss.
d. Has a great title, set specific keyword for the title
9. To make my topic be the center of attention, and be a self-starter and self-discipline.
A good blog should be easy for people to find me and my subject. To create a good blog, I need good self-discipline. Writing a lot of articles constantly is a hard work. I need to give lots of time and effort.
10. A good blog can make money for me.
In this book, Bill Belew showed us five ways how a blog can help us make money:
a. Selling something that blogger owns or other owns. Bill gave us some links for reference: HOOKED ON THE BOOK, and CLICKBANK and Bill’s daughter Mia Mei’s site. It is very interesting blog, Mia Mei shares and teaches people how to learn a second language in her blog.
b. How did a blog help adventure Rick Deutsch to make money by selling Ads directly.
c. Getting enough traffic and place ads in blogs to make money.
