When blogging for money, I found that the one non WordPress item I could NOT get along without was the sitemeter.
I used to do triathlons. I can’t imagine swimming laps without counting how many I went. Or riding a bike and not knowing how fast or how far I had gone. And invariably, whenever I ran somewhere, the first chance I got I took my bike to measure the distance. Before long I knew exactly how far it was between any two possible points I might take between my house and work.
Analytics will tell you how your site is doing.
The free version is more than adequate even it only goes back to the previous 100. I have the paid version at two of my sites but only because somebody gave it to me. I never go anywhere on the paid version that I can’t go on the free version.
What about Google Analytics?
Truth is, I have Google Analytics installed at all my sites. But, I never used to go there. Reason – there was too much information.
I go there a LOT now.
I know a LOT of bloggers who get lost watching their advanced versions of sitemeter or their Google Analytics or their Quantcast reports or Omniture Reports. And all the while they are analyzing they are not writing.
There is nothing that any of those services can provide that a blogger can’t learn from the free Google Analytics..
