So I did decide to break the ice with a debate that has been doing its rounds in the content marketing world with regards to Return of investment. This has been a much debated topic when it comes to comparing Social media ROI vs. Search engine optimization ROI. Does social media marketing make a difference for ROI? Posting blog titles and utilizing local SEO marketing are catalysts for great ROI? After doing a lot of research taking into consideration a lot of information, I think I have enough ammunition to try and conquer this mammoth of a debate. This is not based off of statistical analysis or empirical data used to make statements; it is my opinion and solely my thoughts. People talk about hypothesis and all that kind of sophisticated, complicated lingo when asked to give an opinion in this regards but I am going to take a different approach, I am going to bring into picture a hypothetical scenario- yes, you heard it right…. A HYPOTHETICAL SCENARIO..!! Just hold your breath and read on.. This will convince you to try and agree with my conclusion, well.. if it doesn’t, at least I would be happy knowing the fact that I have made a humble attempt and it had your attention till the last word..!! Trust me; just the thought of it gives me goose bumps..!
Before you proceed to read this post, I do have a few pre-requisites… read with an open mind… and…be bold enough to disagree with me and prove me wrong.. because I’m not saying I am always right. I’m just saying that I’m never wrong… Joke..joke.. jokes apart. Thought I’d clear the tension in the air with some humor. Hoping that it worked, i am going to dig into the actual topic of discussion.
You don’t know something, you are curious about something, the answer you get out of anyone’s mouth is “Google it”…ask yourself… where’s the first place you go visit.. Google has become the divine library for anything known as well as not known to mankind. Anything from the simplest everyday thing to the most complicated and sophisticated twisted scientific research material. This is why many marketers practice local SEO marketing and social media marketingto have their content shown in Google. I have Googled simplest of things when I first moved to the states back in 2008, trust me… whenever it comes to Googling, there’s nothing silly..!! It does crack me up when I start typing and Google gives me suggestions of what people have Googled. It’s just good humor..!!

In a similar way…”Friend me” has become a day to day thing that people say nowadays meaning finding someone on Facebook, sending them a friend request and getting in touch with them.. It’s become so in that people who are not on Facebook are being looked at as weird, different or just a lost kid..!! The number of users on Facebook will boggle your mind, just finding out that 9 out of 10 people you see around you, at this very moment are on Facebook.
Social media marketing has caused many persons to become a part of the various social networks out there. Persons have been blogging about them and using blog titles that would entice anyone to become a part of a social network.
Getting into the core crux of the whole argument, I would like to start it with discussing some numbers… some very mind boggling…unreal numbers..!! I have looked up the total number of users on Google from some very reliable sources, the numbers go something like this- 100,000,000, 000+ total users that is a ginormous one billion users every month..yes, that’s correct… every month with majority of the users accessing Google from United states of America at any given time. Google is so proud of its numbers that it annually releases a what they call it as ” Google Transparency report” which states that there are 98,981 people Googling stuff and looking up information at any given time just in the united states.
Coming to Facebook, total user is 835, 525,280 as of march 2012, a very small number when compared to Google’s statistics even though it is a very large user base in itself or when compared to any other social media website in the world. A lot of companies are now trying and implementing Facebook fan pages in order to market and sell their products. This is a good social media marketing approach but is it the best?? How big is the audience?? How many visitors do actually turn out to be potential business leads??? All these questions don’t seem to be getting answered. I am going to make an attempt..!! Just the fact that Google is trying to take over Facebook makes it a much more arguable topic as marketing on either of them will seem to go hand in hand… just another facet of marketing..!!
Lets per say, in a perfect scenario- one tries to market a product through Google first; using local SEO marketing. Assuming the fact that all possible search engine optimization techniques were implemented such as proper tags, the best blog titles, the best images to capture the visitor’s attention, the best use of keywords, the proper word count, keeping the information alive by constantly updating the information etc. and makes the website be the first result to get pulled up when ever some one tries to Google the information… now is the main part.. if everything was done perfectly, how big of an audience is available for someone who relies on search engine optimization ROI, yes… lets say the whole of Google user base.. it is an exuberant 1000,000,000 users where as if the same person does the same thing on an social networking site such as Facebook, how big of an audience does he has access to??? The answer is simple… a meager 835,525,280. We also need to keep in mind that the people spending their time on Facebook are not really intending to participate in any form of trade right of the back. So the possibility of attaining business leads is very slim.
So in my opinion SEO ROI has more chances of being successful when it comes to picking one of the two marketing techniques keeping in mind that for any website to be successful and popular and to be able to generate business leads, the optimal implementation of local SEO marketing techniques is very critical.
