“Marketing with Social Media” is the name of our textbook written by our professor Mr. Bill Belew. The book mainly talks about what is marketing with social media, how social media becomes one of the efficient marketing tools, how to create your own blog step by step and what kind of issue you would face with when doing your own blog. I’m going to give everyone a brief introduction of this book and share what I have learned from this ” Marketing with social media“.
Why Business Blogs Are “King of Social Media”?
Social media marketing is a very new marketing tool, the first advantage of it is you know where are your audiences, you can contact them easily since you are using the same platform to communicate with each other and also can provide instant interaction via online. Secondly, a good blog with consistent updating, good inbound marketing can drive a lot of traffic which even better than spending money on a trade show (page# 16). Thirdly, social media makes money. This is what I just experienced from my work. I’m working in a food distributor which do wholesale to all the beverage stores and yogurt stores in San Francisco Bay Area. However… we found out that the competition in Bay Area is getting higher and we must find a way out to develop more business opportunities. So what’s the solution? Social media marketing is our solution and which bought us pretty good results so far.
How to drive traffic?
Driving online traffic is just like attracting people on the street to walk into your store. So now, the problem is how to drive these traffics to your blog efficiently. First of all, we should have enough posts (information), a good quantity of posts can make your blog easier to be found by reader. Secondly, good quality article drives good traffic also especially with a user friendly key words so people can find you from search engine easily.(Page#25) Last but not least, keep updating our blog so the search engine will notice that there is always something new on this website and will eventually bring up your website. Also, never give up doing the above three points that Professor Bill Belew taught us. A consistency blog writer will gain not only the number of your posts but more followers and readers in the end. Like what the professor said: “If you are giving up, ask yourself how long have you been at it and how hard have you tried? Stay with it.” Well…consistency is the only way to go.
What are the obstacles we would face with?
When I started to do my blog, I spent lot of time on what I want to write on this blog and what message I want to convey to my audiences. In the end, I decided to write something about my life in Bay Area, give my audiences a brief introduction about Bay Area and share my life experience to them and hopefully can help these readers to get used to the life here easier and faster. From the textbook, Professor Bill gave us several important points: (1) Create a domain name that people could spell and easy to remember or maybe use your name so people can recognize your website. (page#31) (2) Purchase your own domain and hosting, here Professor Belew recommended us http://www.bm2hosting.com/ which is owned by Professor Belew but he doesn’t get a penny through out this website, all he want is to give us a source which we can get a cheaper domain and hosting. (3) Ask yourself, what do you want to write about? Write about something you would care, write about something people would care, make connection with your blog and the real world and lastly, give useful information to your readers so they would come back again in the future. (5) Do not be afraid of the heavy work load. There is no shortcut for creating a well trafficked blog.
10 things to consider when starting your blog:
Here are the advices from Professor Bill Belew
- Once you started your own blog, you became a part of the network and find a network that willing to have you to tag alone with.
- Pick a domain name, the name is not the most important thing, the important part is get a domain name and get it start.
- Write a good Tagline is important. A good tagline will help people to find you easily from search engine, make sure your tagline is not vague and straight to the point of your blog topic.
- Create efficient catagories can also help searchbots to find your blog.
- Use wordpress as your blog writing software because wordpress is a software that created by a blogger for bloggers. In my point of view, this platform is really user friendly, a rookie blogger like me don’t really need spend that much time to learn all the basic functions.
- Pick a template that best fits your theme of blog. For me, the first impression for a blog is really important, a well designed blog make readers want to know more about the content.
- Create a sitemeter to keep tracking who many visitors come to visit you per day and where do they come from.
In practice, I created my domain usabayarealife.com and tried to write blog posts on my life in San Francisco Bay Area. I also add my tagline, catogories and template according to Professor’s instruction, now the website looks pretty good and I have to keep posting stuff in order to enrich the content of my blog.
How to write a quality post?
According to Professor Belew, a blog with good quality should have the following characteristics: First, original and useful content. Some blogs I have read, the contents are either copied from other website or just copied the link from other sources. In order to attract more traffic, writing a blog with an original content is very important. Secondly, a good image can attract people’s eyes when the first sight and the length of the content is recommend between 150 to 200 words. Thirdly, put external and internal links into your post. The advantages to include these links in your blog is you can drive traffic from the inside traffic and outside traffic. Forth, add something unique on the blog, think about something that makes you different from others. For example, I have studied in United States for 2 years and have been working for another one and a half years. I have earned some special experience that most of my friends don’t have. Hence, these experiences would be the topic of my blog in order to share special information.
I totally agree with Professor’s point, the most difficult part as a blogger is doing the same thing every day. For me, I have the passion for writing for my blog but every time I want to write my blog, I feel my brain is not working doing it since I feel so exhausted after work. To avoid this situation from happening again and again, I decided to change my schedule of writing an article. Now, I tried to sleep early and wake up an hour early so I can keep my brain clear and can write something with quality. Writing blog post is an on going process and always need to update whenever you have time. I will try to make it as one of my hobbies and keep up my pace on doing it.
