Blogging is much like cooking. You need to have the right ingredients and the cooking method before you start cooking and similarly, you need to have the right tools and an understanding of the method to blog before you begin to blog.
My journey in building my blog began about a month ago when I joined a class on social media. Before the first day of class, we were required to have our domain names ready and WordPress installed. On the first day of class, we needed to decide the topic and by the second day of class, we were already published. It was pretty quick, but I am glad I got down to writing, because most of my questions got answered as I published even more. This is a great strategy to begin, since many doubts in mind, don’t hold you back and all the doubts eventually get cleared while you type anyway.
However, when I look back, there are a few questions I wish I had asked before I began blogging.
1. What is the realistic time commitment
It’s ideal to update your blog every day and put something new regularly. And each post should meet a minimum word count requirement if you really want searchbots to find you, and have enough content for readers to find you. However, even if you are well read on your topic of choice, you will need to do some research for each post that you write. And research can take anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. So, account for that time when you estimate your time commitment to your blog.
2. What accounts for a quality blog post
When writing a post, you need to keep in mind that you are writing for a person you want to read your article, and post to appeal to them. However, if you want to be read, you need to make sure your text appears to the search engines as well. So, to keep in mind that balance and still manages to write a post that satisfies you is a complex question. I am still configuring if my posts appear to both search engine and to readers. I hope this question will be answered over the next few weeks of the course.
3. How do I get more readers to my blog
This remains a question until today. Although, I have about 70 posts on my blog and I belong to the top 10 blogs for all the past 4 weeks. I am not sure how to increase the number of visitors to my blog. Last I knew, I had a total of 694 visitors in 4 weeks of blogging. But I am not sure if this is enough or if it lags behind. I hope I have not missed an important things over the past few weeks that may have increased this traffic significantly. I used social media to promote my blog, but I hope my effort is enough to keep the visitors coming.
Those are the 3 biggest questions I had. Although, I know I have a good blog going and some of my readers tell me how much they enjoy reading my blog and I do sincerely hope I am doing enough.
