‘Marketing with Social Media’, the name sounded interesting. Before registering for the course for my MBA program, I made sure to google the professor’s bio. An article on the Professor’s interview on the topic was listed out in the search results. I went through the article, which convincingly elaborated the importance of blogging. Now, I’m not an avid reader of books. But, I always found blog posts short and sweet. For me, the process which started with reading articles in the newspaper has now found its own way into online sources.
I attended the first day of class, all prepared with a ready blog site, but still uncertain which topic my blog would cover. The sheer scale, of course requirements took my breath away. Later, on interaction with other students from the class, breathed a sigh of relief, when I realized that I was not the only one. Most of us concurred in the same opinion.
Baffled, I began writing on the topics related to my profession. Initially I chose to write about the current market trends, new releases and other advances in the industry. Despite being in the profession for over 4 years, my lack of the up to date knowledge on the subject was pretty obvious. When I read various blogs on the topic, I came across abundant stuff over the internet. I realized that the people who shared the same profession at different parts of the globe, encountered different problems. In the USA, where engineers and marketing professionals worked towards increasing data speed in order to grow the profit margin, in India, they raised issues concerning unfair distribution of the profit margin for service providers, but increasing the customer base for the social networking and search engine providers.
Development in different parts of the world redefined the advancements extensively as per their needs. Firefox is planning to release a low end operating system for the smart phones in order to extend phone industry to potential emerging markets. Whereas, Nokia has released high end smart phones specifically with high quality image and video capture, and Samsung have released phablets for business savvy customers.
As time progressed, I realized that substantial time was spent in gathering information before writing it down in my blog posts. In turn, I couldn’t match my professor’s expectations of the high amount of content on the blog site. I narrowed the topic under discussion further down specifically to W-CDMA technology, on which, I worked for over a year. It turned out to be very beneficial for me. I not only used the opportunity to learn theoretical knowledge on the topic, but it automatically helped me in everyday life in the lab. I wrote my posts concisely in 200 to 400 words and at times up to 600 words. I frequently opened my own blog during work to verify the procedures and formula. I wrote blog posts in bullet format, without concentrating much on the sentence completion adjectives or adverbs. I failed again. I couldn’t match professor’s expectation on the length of the topic. It was indeed demoralizing when I couldn’t even manage passing grades after working so hard to write blogs.
Much later after the first lecture, we again got an opportunity to attend the class for the second lecture. Professor Bill requested his students with high page views to speak about how they managed it. The thing is I noticed in most of them is that all these students passionately wrote on the topic they liked the most. Being devotedly passionate on the topic, they already had a lot to write about. Some of them wrote blogs during daily commute to office, while some finished their post in merely 15 minutes. When they wrote the blogs down, extensive research was optional for them, whereas it took me hours of preparation to come up with a decent blog post.
Later, I changed the topic from technology to random incidences in life. I wrote them down in the form of stories in witty idiom. After almost 2 months, I managed to match professor’s weekly requirements of the blog content. I also realized that, when I always wanted to try my hand on the script writing and I finally got some overbearing authority that compelled me to begin.
