Is there a difference between Social Media and Social Networking?
Are they the same animal? Just called by different names?
They are not the same.
Social Media is good content that real people like to read that is published (media) often. It is so good that real people leave comments and interact with the author and the author with them. It is so good that sometimes the commenters interact with one another. (social).
Social Networking is hanging out with friends and families and 100s or even 1000s of ‘intimate’ connections, fans and friends.
Social Media is good for business.
Social Networking is fun. But we don’t do business with friends and families. And pushing ourselves on those who are not so close is not a good strategy for bringing them into the fold.
A good social media strategy can serve a business well for developing leads, getting conversions, building a fan base, and giving substance to readers, followers, connections … call them what you like.
A good social networking strategy is like planning to get people to like you because of some reason they may not have thought of or didn’t know about you. Let me know how that works out for you.
Social media is a business tool.
Social networking is used to do business but it just plain doesn’t work very well.
