Inbound, content and social media marketing (all the same to me for the most part) beat all other forms of marketing hands down for a LOT of reasons.
But there is one reason that trumps all the others.
Here it is:
It is cheaper and easier for people to find you than it is for you to find them.
Make no mistake about it.
I have a friend who lives in Boston. He flies to San Francisco a couple of times each year to set up a booth at Moscone center.
There he hopes to collect business cards while he passes out little bags of M & Ms and rubber brains so that he can go back home and do the email follow-up thing.
It costs him $500+ to fly. He has to stay in a San Francisco hotel for 5 days for another $1000. He has to eat and taxi for another $500. And he has to pay for the booth – abt 5′ x 10′ for $7,000!
That adds up to $9000. And he has to miss work. So, I’ll round it up to $10K! And he does this 2 times each year = $20K!!!
If I had $20K I could get 20,000 (probably a lot more!) real people who are interested in you so much so that they searched and found you. I could get a significant percentage of them to fill out a contact us form and reach out to you! Instead of the other way around.
Content marketing is when your content goes to work for you. It is cheaper and easier … but maybe not as ‘cool’ as saying “I am going to a marketing conference in San Francisco.”
